Mike – Tips, tricks, and what I learned about your rig are below. The rest of you can move along… unless you have and IC-706.
Auto Repeater pg 32 and 53
This is a function that sets repeater shift automatically. You have to hold the Lock button while you power on to set it and unset it. It determines the plus or minus by the frequency. There’s a chart in the manual. Not sure if there’s a downside but having a choice makes me think there might be. Simplex seems unaffected. I set yours to ON, so the shift is taken care of. You set it in the SET MENU by powering on with the LOCK pressed. Exit the SET MENU by powering off and on….. I guess.
Beep/side tone audio levels and speech compression are controlled by screws inset into the right side of the case. Small, Philips.

My routine that worked for repeater programming:
SP is short press
LP is long press (press and hold about 2 seconds, or until something happens)
- SP DISPLAY until it says M2 on the bottom
Note: in VFO mode, displays MCL above F2. In VFO mode, it says M > V - SP F3 to set to VFO. Will display M > V above F2.
- Use VFO to tune to Repeater receive freq.
Note: Can press TS button to switch between MHz and KHz (fast and slow) tuning - LP TS to adjust the step increment
- LP DISPLAY
- M-CH knob to find Q6 RPTR TONE
- VFO to set tone
- SP DISPLAY to exit
- M-CH knob to change memory channels to a blank channel. Will display BLANK symbol above channel number.
- SP F2 to write to memory
CW settings are in the Quick set menu. Must select CW mode to get those menu items. FM mode brings FM topics like repeaters and such.
You have to get familiar with the menus. SP the DISPLAY and it cycles through menu branches, shown on the bottom of the display. SP MENU to cycle through that branch.
Helpful Crib Sheet:
M4 has the BRK, Break-in.
M3 has NB and MET. SP MET cycles through the different meters, ALC, Po, and SWR
S4 has NR and NRL. Noise Reduction and Noise Reduction Level. They’ll take some reading of the manual and fiddling to understand what works best.

Q1 RF POWER
Q4 CW PADDLE (little symbols for paddle, bug, or straight key)
Q5 KEY SPEED
SP DISPLAY to exit
Has the MARS mod, will transmit and receive GMRS
